Update on the Gambia Village School Project

March 2018

Phase 3 of the Colombiere School project will commence next month.  This project will comprise of two new school blocks, which will accommodate an additional 60 children.

The construction of these two new blocks has been made possible as a result of the fundraising efforts of a couple of HAPC volunteers, Ricky Rodrigues and Druve Patel.  Ricky made the gruelling trek up to Mount Kilimanjaro, raising £3,000 in the process and the block will be given his name.  Druve raised a similar amount from various fundraising events held at his late father, Vinnies bar/restaurant.  In memory of his father, the second block will be named Vinnies Kingsfisher.

The charity is indebted to both Ricky and Druve for their untiring efforts and generosity.

There was a lengthy delay in getting this project off the ground because the charity was unable to appoint a building firm, who would recognise the charity’s status as a voluntary self-funded organisation.  A tender process was then followed and the charity obtained more reasonable and acceptable quotations for consideration.  An appointment has since been made and the charity is pleased to report that construction of the Ricky Rodrigues block is now underway.
